Stuff I Like– September 2015

So this day is off to a lousy start. The kids are home sick from school (Leo has nasty cold symptoms, Tess has a fever and nausea) and I am missing a doctor’s appointment which is now rescheduled for November(!) so no fun all around. But we are lounging around and will just have to make the best of it. In that vein, I thought I’d sit down and try to write a post that has been in my head for a while–things that have been working for me lately.

Parchment Baking Sheets


My laziness is well known and here is a fun shortcut I discovered and now can’t live without–individual sheets of parchment. They fit perfectly into cookie sheets without needing to be trimmed. Lazy perfection–love love love!

Pumpkin Cereal


I saw these at Sprouts the other day on their new seasonal pumpkin display and they are wheat-free and corn-free so I bought them.  And both kids love them! I will have to stock up before they disappear.

My crossbody bag


I have a great purse (not pictured) that I love but it is huge, which is great cuz it carries all my crap and I can even throw in both tablets for doctor’s offices–but sometimes I just want to run into Walmart with my wallet, phone and keys and that is why I love this little fabric purse I got at Target. It has three pockets–the front is perfect for my phone; the second is narrow for papers and a pen (this was great at Disney for holding our passes and tickets); third is just big enough for wallet and keys, or wallet and sunglasses while at Disney. I could write an entire post about wearing a crossbody bag at theme parks, the beach, and during birthday parties. Anyway, I carry the small purse in the larger purse and pull it out when the need arises. Love!

My new homework habit

Going into this school year after a super lazy summer, I knew I had to be mindful about starting new habits to manage time. One thing that I tried and has been working is starting homework at 4:00 each afternoon. (We get home from school about 3:20.) In years past, I would figure out how much homework Leo had that night and we’d procrastinate until there was just enough time to do the assignments–you can imagine how well that worked and how frustrating it was to realize midstream that oops, we forgot social studies! Let me tell you, the Fourth Grade workload is Harsh! There are days we start at 4:00 and are scrambling to finish at dinner time (6:30)! But most days with this system we are able to take breaks between subjects and get it all done.

I had first envisioned a schedule of 4-5 = homework, 5-6 = showers, 6-6:30 = I cook dinner. However, between abundant homework and meals that take longer than 30 minutes to throw together, shower nights had me scrambling. So now on shower nights (the kids take showers every other night), we start the showers at 4:00, then move downstairs for homework where I can supervise and cook at the same time. That typically works pretty well. Of course now we have soccer practice one or two nights a week and that throws a major wrench–no, I don’t have that one all figured out yet, stay tuned (and send prayers!).😉

How We Do: Eating on Vacation with Food Allergies

We recently returned from our Spring Break trip to San Diego.  We spent Easter with Walter’s family, then did Legoland and Sea World the rest of the week.  With food allergies, eating on vacation is really hard and I get asked by friends and other allergy moms how we manage it–and it feels like a big accomplishment when we do!–so I’ll share how we did it this past week.

Remember, Leo avoids wheat, corn, peaches, pineapple, and peanuts.  His reactions are internal and delayed (he has Eosinophilic Esophagitis), which isn’t necessarily a good thing BUT we don’t have to worry about histamine reactions such as hives or, God forbid, anaphylaxis. And for the most part we don’t have to worry about minor exposures or cross contamination.


We like to choose hotels that include hot breakfasts. On this trip, we stayed at Residence Inn and they have a very nice hot breakfast buffet. Leo is able to eat scrambled eggs (offered every day) and he sometimes also would choose the potatoes. He also gets a pile of fresh fruit (this hotel always had honeydew and cantaloupe, which both kids loved).  I bring two pieces of his wheat-free, corn free bread to the breakfast area and toast them.

Oh my goodness, one day this week someone stole his GF toast! I don’t know how it happened, I was right there, but I put in my two pieces of Rudi bread, a young woman put in one piece of wheat bread, then I put in my bagels–only two pieces of toast fell out and they were not Rudi’s.  What in the world?! Honestly I can’t figure out what happened.  From then on, I guarded the toaster like a HAWK.

These buffets are great because each of us gets to eat what we want, and they power us up more than cold cereal in our room.


How you eat out with food allergies really depends on what the allergic person likes to eat. It’s easy to eat gluten free if you love salad, for example, but Leo doesn’t.  On last year’s (very similar) trip, he ate a ton of hamburgers.  We realized we could get a burger from almost any restaurant, swap out our own WF/CF bun and we were all set. But right now Leo doesn’t like burgers. Oy! Thankfully, he does like sandwiches. So on our first day at Legoland we headed to the Garden Restaurant. We ordered Leo a sandwich that had turkey and avocado. When the food came, I swapped out the Rudi bread we brought with us. (Sadly the avocado was spread on the bun, rather than sliced, so not much was able to transfer over.)  Leo liked it.

On Tuesday, we spent the morning at Sea World, but once we were ready for lunch, Walter suggested we head to La Jolla. We found a BBQ joint called Bubba’s.  As it was past the noon rush, we had no trouble asking the cashier about what was free of wheat and corn (she was very friendly and helpful). We ordered Leo a brisket sandwich with just the dry rub on it. He loved it! Again, I had Rudi bread with me, but that day, it just fell to pieces when we took it out of the baggie! Grrr. Anyway, Walter made one after the other of little open faced meat-on-bread sandwiches with a little BBQ sauce (the spicy was safe, according to the cashier, but the sweet sauce was not–and the sauce was available like a ketchup dispenser so we could add it to the dry meat in the proportion he wanted–fantastic).  I have never seen Leo eat beef so enthusiastically. I believe he ate every bite.  Praise!

Wednesday we were back at Legoland. I should add that neither Legoland nor Sea World allow outside food.  However, Legoland does not inspect bags, so that was no problem.  At Sea World, I tuck our food in between our change of clothes in our backpacks and I’ve never had a problem.  If stuff were discovered, I’d have no problem explaining why our dietary needs dictate bringing in bread and snacks. Anyway…. We went back to Garden Restaurant and this time when ordering, Walter asked if they had gluten free bread.  They did and they were able to show us the nutrition information for it so we could see it was corn-free.  Hooray!!!  Leo ordered a different sandwich this time (roast beef maybe?) and it came nicely prepared on GF bread that didn’t fall apart. Yay, another success!

I should mention another “casualty” of allergy eating. I don’t like sandwiches, I find it difficult to order at deli type places like this. So what did I order? Grilled cheese which was only offered on the children’s menu! LOL. I didn’t feel bad ordering a second kids meal (obviously Tess ordered one too) since Leo ordered off the full priced menu.  Whatever, you do what you gotta do. And the grilled cheese was yummy.😉 One complaint about the kids meal though.  Grownup sandwiches came with kettle chips, kids meals came with Baked Lays–yuck. They were gross.😦 Legoland, please give out better chips with your kids meal.

Thursday we spent much of our day at the hotel, swimming and doing laundry, so we ate lunch in our room. We love having a kitchenette, though I didn’t cook much last week.  Walter bought some nice deli meat from Sprouts and I made boxed GF mac n cheese.  (I ate a peanut butter sandwich, I told you I don’t do lunch meat.)

Friday we were back at Sea World.  Our typical lunch spot there is the Shipwreck Cafe but for whatever reason, that was closed. They have burgers but I think also a deli sandwich. Alas! So we headed to Calypso Bay Smokehouse since we had done so well with BBQ on Tuesday.  Also, it’s their designated “allergy-friendly” restaurant. We told the cashier we needed to speak to someone about allergies. Eventually a nice woman came out carrying a binder (turns out she was the chef). We told her our issues and she explained that all the meats were seasoned only with salt and pepper and she could serve Leo the dry brisket. She didn’t want to give Leo fries due to cross contamination with chicken nuggets in the fryer and I didn’t argue since Leo rarely likes fries anyway (strange boy) and she substituted strawberries.  She instructed us to order the rest of our food, but she would take care of Leo’s plate personally.  We did as she told us and we were able to grab our own plates and pay, explaining to the cashier that Leo was having the brisket but we were waiting for the chef. We checked out, Tess and I grabbed napkins etc. and a table while Leo and Walter waited a few minutes for the special plate.

Oh, and we asked the chef if she had any gluten free bread and she did not. Turns out this smokehouse didn’t do sandwiches–it was meat (either brisket or chicken-on-the-bone) served with a dinner roll and fries.

By this time, we had run out of the Rudi bread I’d brought from Phoenix and Walter’s trips to Sprouts and Safeway came up empty, so we now carried Rudi’s cinnamon raisin bread.  We weren’t sure how that would go over in a beef sandwich, but somehow we got through.  This was not Leo’s favorite meal of the trip, I’ll tell you, but he ate a lot of the brisket, to my surprise and delight. (Unlike the meat at Bubba’s which was chopped, these were just strips of meat–and plastic flatware didn’t really allow us to change that.)  Bottom line: that was probably the last time we will eat at Calypso in Sea World.


Thanks to our many many trips to San Diego (Walter’s family lives there), we now have a few favorites we can rely on.

After arriving in SD on Saturday night, we drove to our old favorite Pizza Nova. They have a safe GF pizza Leo can eat. The rest of us love the diverse menu. Tess ordered mac n cheese off the kids menu, I ordered chicken fettuccine alfredo (it was quite good) and Walter had a seafood pasta I believe.  This isn’t Leo’s favorite pizza in the world, but we all ate well.  It also is right on the marina for a great view. Service is excellent. Highly recommend!

Our big meal on Easter was a lunch my father-in-law prepared (pork roast, I think we fixed the kids quesadillas, can’t remember) but by evening we decided to order Domino’s for everyone. God bless Domino’s for adding GF pizza to their menu a few years ago–they make it possible for us to eat almost anywhere. Praise!

Monday night after Legoland, we went to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza in Carlsbad. We knew from eating at one in SD that they offer a brown rice penne Leo can eat. He ordered it with marinara sauce and parmesan and was a happy camper. Yay! (I so wish there was a Sammy’s here in Phoenix.) The rest of us enjoy their diverse menu. Tess ordered the hamburger sliders off the kids menu and Walter and I were oddly in sync, each getting a chicken wrap.

Tuesday was our half day at Sea World. After Bubba’s for lunch we spent some time on the beach, then headed to the in-law’s house for dinner.  We brought in Mexican from a local spot and we made Leo his normal burrito (rice tortilla, cheddar, homemade guacamole, Macayo’s taco sauce). Everyone was happy.🙂

Wednesday we were back up in Carlsbad.  We left Legoland and returned to a spot we found last year: Blaze. This place is neat, you order a custom pizza and watch it be built and fired.  They have a safe GF pizza for Leo who ordered his with red peppers. Tess got sausage, I got pepperoni, and Walter ordered the Artisan (I think it was called).  Again, not Leo’s favorite pizza in the world but he ate it up.

Thursday was our rest day and we ended it at the in-laws.  My father-in-law made fried chicken (his specialty, yum) and we whipped up another burrito for Leo.

Friday, we had a long, glorious day at Sea World, then headed back to Pizza Nova. What can I say, it is easy and yummy! And we had a super server that night (I think his name was Marc?). Leo and I had pizza (it was quite good), Tess had pasta, Walter had lasagna.  Again, everyone was happy.  Yay!

On the Road

We always stop during our 6 hour road trip for lunch. After a later start last Saturday, we stopped at McDonald’s in Gila Bend.  I had packed sunbutter and jelly sandwiches for Leo in a lunchbox with ice pack. We either do it that way or bring a bun and order a hamburger.  On our drive home the following Saturday, we ate at the Arby’s in Yuma. This is a favorite of ours because it’s at a less-busy exit than most of their fast food choices. I had packed Leo a quesadilla which he ate, then we got him a little turkey sandwich and put it on the cinnamon bread. Whatever works–he ate it up.

In terms of advice for allergy travelers all I can say is try your best. It’s trial and error and we’ve been doing this for years. One thing I didn’t do on this trip that I usually have to, is call restaurants.  To find restaurants I usually search on yelp for “gluten free” in our current location.  If I find a place that offers GF pizza or pasta, I have to call them to ask about corn ingredients. I remember one time I found like 5 Italian restaurants in the area (this must have been last summer in Anaheim) that had gluten free pasta but in the end NONE were safe for Leo–all were made with corn.  It’s so frustrating! Which is why it was refreshing on this trip to have so many places that were tried and true.  Huzzah!

Also, it seemed a new world opened up when we realized we could just bring in our own bread or bun. Like I said, we did that a LOT on our trip a year ago when Leo was willing to eat burgers. Suddenly we could eat almost anywhere. And the restaurant doesn’t care–they don’t have to cook anything differently, they’ve never questioned us about it. Hopefully now that Leo likes sandwiches, this will open up a range of places too, bringing our own bread.  (After the falling-apart-bread-fiasco at Bubba’s I started traveling with his bread in a plastic lunch box to protect it as best I could.) We have also done some trips where we get Domino’s 3 nights in one week when that was where we were finding success. It’s not ideal, but he got fed, then you go home and eat like normal.  Last year’s trip to Anaheim I cooked several nights in the hotel room–even brought (and used) the crockpot! Plan ahead as best as you can, then be flexible.

It was only a few years ago that we couldn’t stay at a theme park for a whole day. We would go to Sea World when it opened, stay about 4 hours (surviving on snacks I’d brought into the park) then leave for a late lunch, usually back at our hotel. That’s why we put off Legoland and Disneyland for so long (the kids had been begging for years, especially about Legoland), we knew we would need to stay in those parks all day. It was only last year that we felt ready to do so. Anyway, it’s nice to look back on how far we’ve come.  It’s not easy, but I’m grateful how well this trip in particular worked out.

What I’m Into ::: January 2015

Once again, I feel like blogging but not doing images and linking stuff so here goes.

I briefly thought I’d post after each book I read or movie I watched. Hahaha, let’s all LOL over that idea. So this is roughly from the month of January.

Family Movies

Heaven is for Real. I read and loved the book, but the movie was a disappointment. It really focused on the difficulties of the parents to deal with their child’s vision and the skepticism of their friends and stuff with the dad’s job and finances…. The best part of the book for me was the boy’s visions of heaven, what he said happened while he was there, and there just wasn’t enough of that in my opinion in the movie.  So I recommend the book but not the film.

Back to the Future. Walter and I thought the kids were old enough to watch this classic and boy, was that fun! I’m not sure the kids loved it (they didn’t hate it), but it was a treat for Walter and I to watch it with them!!!

Big Hero 6. The kids and I saw this in the theater. Kids loved it, of course. I liked it enough to not want to leave to use the bathroom, so that is saying something.  Warning: there are some fat jokes.  I will add that I liked the diversity of the characters, the girls in STEM, the gender roles (e.g. the girl was better at driving in a car chase than the boy). Two thumbs up.

Nanny McPhee. I’d say all 4 of us liked this one. It was fun for the grown-ups to watch Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, and Angela Lansbury. Nice family film. (I didn’t understand, though, why the title character got prettier and thinner as the kids behaved better, no idea what that was about!) Sadly, her parenting tricks involved magic so I didn’t learn any bits of wisdom to take into my own life.😉

What the grown-ups are watching

American Hustle. First I’ll tell you it took us like 5 nights to make it through this movie, so perhaps that’s why we initially liked it but by the end were bored.  Second, it didn’t make a lot of sense. Apparently a bunch of it was improvised and I think that contributed to several scenes that were basically gibberish.  Great performances, though, but maybe too long and not edited enough into a coherent story.

Deadwood. We are enjoying this HBO show from 10 years ago. I can’t even explain why. We enjoyed the first season but the second season so far is harder to follow, so we’ll see if we stick with it.  I like the history–I think they do a good job of portraying how dirty the conditions and people were.  There are many characters I really like/care about. And it’s funny–seriously, I’m starting to think it’s more of a comedy than a drama!  Bonus points, since I’ve been to Deadwood and lived for a summer in South Dakota.


2015 is off to a good reading start.

All Through the Night by Mary Higgins Clark. This is barely a novel, more like a Christmas novella, not a full fledged romantic suspense like MHC is known for. But I loved it. It was easy to guess how it was all going to get sorted out, but it was still fun to go along for the ride.

Texts from Jane Eyre by Mallory Ortberg. When I heard about this book, I had to read it, so thank you to my parents for giving it to me for Christmas. It was a cute read but sadly I’d only read about half the books she parodied.  But that has inspired me to pick up some more classics so I can “get” the other chapters.  On the one hand, this could be a good one to get from the library since it’s a quick read; on the other hand, I’m glad I own it so I can reference it in the future as I read more classics.  I also wish she had parodied more Jane Austen books–I’d love to see a second volume.

The Fault in our Stars by John Green.  I finally got to read this book that was on everyone’s must-read list.  Like everyone else, I devoured it in under 48 hours. I liked it and I’m eager to see the movie, but time will tell if it becomes a favorite.

Bossypants by Tina Fey. I read this one in 48 hours as well.  It was a fun, easy read. I like Tina Fey a lot and this mostly affirmed my like of her, though there were moments I wanted her to be more strongly feminist.  But I didn’t love how she jumped around in time and topic (there was an entire chapter about doing a photo shoot–what?).  Since much of the beginning of the book was about being unlucky with the opposite sex, I was surprised she didn’t go into meeting, dating and marrying her husband. Seriously, she only briefly mentions she met him through Second City. It seemed like a thread she just left hanging behind and I would’ve been interested in reading about their love story. Also weird: the entire last chapter where she debates having a second child. While I could relate, having had similar “one kid or two” discussions myself (though I wasn’t balancing a fancy career), it was awkwardly personal.   This is just nitpicking–I enjoyed the book and think most liberal tv-watching women would too.

2014 Favorites

I feel like as the year closes I want to share some favorite books and movies and tv shows from the last year–but I don’t feel like doing all the bloggy things like linking to amazon and adding pictures–so we’ll see how this goes.


I didn’t read enough books in 2014.😦 The list I kept says I read 11 books but I think I stopped keeping track. (In 2013, I read 23 books; in 2012, I read 17.)  I got bogged down in non-fiction parenting books but I’ve had enough of that. I’m eager to get back to fiction reading in 2015!

Looking at my list, I read a lot of okay books, books I could’t put down but then didn’t stay with me. Or in the case of Gone Girl, I couldn’t put it down but hated it by the end.

So the winners for 2014 are:

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman.  If I had to choose between the movie and the book, I’d choose the movie. But both stand nicely on their own, the book was very enjoyable to read, and I loved to compare and contrast the two.

Pitch Perfect by Mickey Rapkin. This book isn’t for everyone but if you love a cappella, Glee and the movie Pitch Perfect, and/or you went to Tufts in the ’90s, I recommend it.


I can’t remember what all we watched this year. I can tell you that we recently watched Guardians of the Galaxy and all 4 of us loved it.  We will be buying it and watching it a lot.

The other day, Walter and I watched Seeking a Friend for the End of the World–I loved it (I think Walter liked it too) and it stayed with me.


If you are looking for new shows to stream, and you have access to HBO, we are big fans of both The Leftovers and True Detective season 1. Each series contains sex and nudity (boo!) but in both cases I recommend them anyway.

We continue to watch The Walking Dead, we are catching up on old Top Chef seasons on Hulu, and looking forward to Downton Abbey‘s return in January. I’ve been watching the new CBS series Madam Secretary and really like it (as of the 4th episode or whatever because I am behind).


If you received a “favorites” gift from me this year then you know my new favorite thing is decorative tape–washi tape, scotch tape, duct tape. I have more tape than ideas to use them–but it’s become a fun hobby/collection.

How We Do: Enchiladas

For years, I made enchiladas using Macayo’s enchilada sauce. It was basically the only sauce I ever liked.  I don’t generally like enchiladas and yet I love this sauce. But at some point we wanted to see if we could get Leo to like enchiladas and Macayo’s has wheat as an ingredient. (Boo!)  We tried a bunch of safe enchilada sauces (no wheat, no corn) but we were never successful at finding one we all liked.  For a brief time, we found one Leo liked and I would make his enchiladas separately and then use Macayo’s for the rest of us, but he didn’t like being different (which I totally understand). Also, he didn’t like the ground beef so his would be made with just cheese.   (Tess used to like hers with beef but has now stitched to cheese. Never a dull moment.)

Finally, I decided to try to put all our enchiladas in the same pan. Here is what our enchiladas look like these days:


On the left are Leo’s cheese enchiladas in rice tortillas. In the center are Tess’ cheese enchiladas in corn tortillas. The pile on the right are the beef enchiladas in corn tortillas that Walter and I eat.

Last night Leo decided he likes the beef (great news!), so next time I will make that change for him.🙂

The Frontera sauce is a different consistency from the Macayo’s (by the way, I use two pouches of Frontera to cover all our tortillas) so it’s taken me a few tries to figure out how to use them. Basically I find it easier to fold the tortillas in half rather than try to fold them in thirds. As you can see, it’s kind of any ugly mess, but very delicious!

If you don’t know how to make enchiladas (or want to know “how we do it”), I heat the sauce in a medium pan on about medium heat, then one at a time put the tortilla in sauce to warm it, then remove the tortilla to the baking dish (currently using 9×13), stuff if with either meat or cheese, then fold and repeat.  After each layer, add some extra sauce and some cheese.  Cook according to the sauce directions.  (Leo’s rice tortillas are so big I cut them in half for this recipe.)  For the meat, I just brown ground beef and season with black pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes. I like that I can brown the meat earlier in the day, then getting the enchiladas ready for the oven only takes 15-20 minutes.

Leo’s 9th Birthday.  He named it “the three days of chaos” because we had his party on Saturday and his real birthday on Monday and opened presents sporadically in between.  We all had a lot of fun celebrating. I can’t believe my first-born is 9!!!



Well I told you how I’d be participating in the summer wardrobe challenge with Get Your Pretty On–it’s lots of fun interacting in the Facebook group and super easy getting dressed in the mornings.  I accidentally posted this outfit selfie on my regular Facebook page instead of the group’s private page, then deleted it when I saw my error. But since that cat is out of the bag, I’ll go ahead and post it here.  The top is DKNY that I found at Ross, the shorts are Gloria Vanderbilt from Bealls Outlet.  Shoes are fake-Toms from Kmart. Necklace was a gift. This is one of my favorite outfits from the challenge so far.


Safe s’mores! Someone on the Eosinophilic Facebook page said they had found corn-free marshmallows at Whole Foods so I had to try our local store.  Success! But they didn’t have wheat-free graham crackers, so then I went to Sprouts and found some.  Hershey bars from Target and we were ready to go! Leo loved them, Tess not so much. I had one and can tell you they are as good as the traditional!



Fun things to do this 4th of July weekend.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to a mellow 3-day weekend, but I think I’ll search pinterest for some fun ways to holiday-it-up.

These are days

This post is really just for myself, I think it’s something where “you had to be there” but it’s been on my mind so I’m letting it out.

I think I’ve been thinking about this because the upcoming MOPS theme is Be You, Bravely–and since I write for our group’s newsletter I’ve been pondering that subject. When was I myself, bravely?  And I think of the Contracts final in law school.  I can’t really give you a backstory–it was the first semester of law school, it was about 3 months after my college graduation.  The professor was scary as heck and his final exam was 6 hours long! I was 21 years old.

I don’t remember much about the exam itself, or the questions, I think there was a scenario about quahogs.  Um, what? (Just googled it, that’s a type of clam.)  But here’s my story–there were times throughout the exam when I quoted language from the UCC (Uniform Commercial Code)–and I did what I’d learned to do in college. When I came across “him” or “his,” I changed it to gender-neutral language.  Ex: “and until [s/]he receives such assurance may if commercially reasonable suspend any performance for which [s/]he has not already received the agreed return.”  It was a natural as breathing, when you come across he, make it s/he. No brainer.  Except I did this knowing full well that my professor, the one who would be reading my exam answers, was one of the authors of the UCC. I was basically correcting my professor on his own exam.

Some of my classmates were surprised when I mentioned what I’d done, but I felt great. I look back at that moment as my most self-actualized. I had spent 4 years at a liberal college and now I was out in the world (haha, hardly) and I don’t know, illustrating what I’d learned, staying true to my values. I don’t know.

And then the postscript of that story is that I got an A-. Which is huge because I spent most of that semester beyond confused about Contracts and completely befuddled when the prof would call on me in class. So it was a triumph of all my cramming and a tribute to Professor White that he didn’t hold my editing against me. (Or maybe he was afraid of giving the feminazi a bad grade and being charged with discrimination. LOL)

So that was my “Be you, bravely” moment. Too bad I can’t think of another from the last 15 years.

Another random story along the same lines (that somewhere inside me is a latent intellectual)–I had a dream the other morning that makes me smile.  It seems to have been about choosing my college courses at the beginning of a semester. I went around to different departments to see what classes were being offered.  At one point I had an argument with a professor about racist mascots. Next, there was a women’s history class being offered about women’s magazines from the ’50s and I asked if the professor would be talking about race and class and the women excluded from these magazines.  And finally, I enrolled in a class about meal planning and grocery shopping. I believe we were going to go shopping as a class. And the professor told me that some students like to focus on side dishes, and I got so excited and said “Yeah, let’s focus on side dishes!”  In the dream, I had that feeling of “this is the right course for me.”

So I woke up from this dream and I got such a kick out of it. How funny that one minute I was debating intellectual issues and the next I got excited about a class on meal planning.  And it was affirming. I chose, among other things, to do what I’m doing–planning meals and shopping for my family. And I was excited about it.

No grand conclusion, just some introspection. Kicking butt on the Contracts final, meeting Walter (we sat next to each other at that exam, by the way–he holds it against me that I finished (10 minutes) before time ran out), using my brain, being acknowledged for my accomplishments–in some ways those were the good old days. Or it can seem that way when I’m pulling my hair out as a stay-at-home-mom.  But (in the words of 10,000 Maniacs) these are days.  These are the glory years. We only get 18 summers with our kids (Leo will, I assume, leave for college in 10 years).  I get to spend every day (sometimes all 24 hours) with my three favorite people.  I am so blessed!
